【講題大綱】

The free5GC is an open-source project for 5th generation (5G) mobile core networks. The ultimate goal of this project is to implement the 5G core network (5GC) defined in 3GPP Release 15 (R15) and beyond. Because of free5GC’s completeness, openness, and excellent interoperability with many base stations and cellular phones complying with the international standards, more and more researchers from all over the world utilize free5GC as a platform to verify their systems. Recently free5GC is moving forward to R16, R17, and Beyond. In this talk, I will present our recent research and development of free5GC, which include 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN). The emergence of free5GC has changed the way of research in the field of the telecommunications network. In addition, free5GC breaks the shackles of traditional industries so as to deploy the core network software to any hardware platform. Released from software’s dependence on hardware, the core network can be popularized in the mobile communication network market. Many small Netcom manufacturers can build white-box machines with built-in free5GC to penetrate the high-barrier telecommunications industry so as to break the situation that core networks have been dominated by few international manufacturers for years, thereby creating a new industrial chain.

【講者簡介】

Professor Chien Chen is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and the Center of Information Technology Service at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. He received his B.S degree in Computer Engineering from National Chiao Tung University in 1982 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California and Stevens Institute of Technologies in 1990 and 1996. Dr. Chen held a Chief Architect and Director of Switch Architecture position in Terapower Inc., which was a terabit switching fabric SoC startup in San Jose, before joining National Chiao Tung University as an Assistant Professor in August 2002. Prior to joining Terapower Inc., he is a key member of Coree Network, responsible for a next-generation IP/MPLS switch architecture design. He joined Lucent Technologies, Bell Labs, NJ, in 1996 as a Member of Technical Staff, where he led the research in the area of ATM/IP switch fabric design, traffic management, and traffic engineering. His current research interests include 5G and 6G core networks, P4 switches, software-defined networks and cloud computing.
