The Institute of Data Science and Engineering (IDSE) at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University is the first graduate institute among national universities to focus exclusively on data science. Situated within the College of Computer Science, the Institute integrates faculty from the Colleges of Science, Management, Electrical Engineering, and Biological Science and Technology. It serves as a cross-college integration platform to build a comprehensive academic and educational framework for data science.
In this emerging interdisciplinary field, we aim to cultivate high-level researchers who possess core competencies in both Computer Science and Mathematical Statistics, combined with domain knowledge in management, biomedicine, or engineering. Our mission is to conduct interdisciplinary research, perform deep knowledge discovery, and establish predictive mechanisms and models for today’s complex, large-scale, multi-modal data. By doing so, we guide the application of data science across all aspects of human life and drive the development of emerging technology industries.
Pioneering Status: The first institute in a national university dedicated to data science, specializing in the cultivation of data scientists.
Comprehensive Curriculum: Offers an integrated interdisciplinary program covering Big Data analysis, computer science, statistical analysis, machine learning, and applied sciences.
Interdisciplinary Research: Promotes cross-disciplinary research through joint supervision of graduate students by faculty from computer science, mathematics, statistics, management, electrical engineering, and life sciences.
Global and Industrial Synergy: Collaborates with leading domestic and international research institutions and industries to develop forward-looking research and hone practical experience, producing experts proficient in both theory and practice.
Industry-Academia Integration: Partners with major global IT corporations for talent cultivation and industrial application. This includes the establishment of the Big Data Technology Innovation Research Center—utilizing high-value analytics software donated through the "IBM U100 Campus Big Data and Analytics Technology Software Project"—and the joint promotion of the Big Data University (BDU) Program.
The Institute integrates the core strengths of the College of Computer Science (including data mining, big data analysis, database systems, computer visualization, parallel/distributed processing, machine learning, AI, mobile sensing, and IoT) with the mathematical statistics and applied disciplines of the College of Science. This foundation is further expanded to include interdisciplinary fields from other colleges, such as IC design and manufacturing (Electrical Engineering), transport logistics and financial analysis (Management), bioinformatics and translational medicine (Life Sciences), and intelligent materials and robotics (Engineering). Our goal is to establish core professional disciplines in data science and apply them to emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT), Smart Manufacturing, Smart Biomedicine, Smart Transportation/Logistics, and Fintech.
We recruit students from diverse backgrounds related to data science, providing them with multifaceted research directions and broader career opportunities. The curriculum is divided into two major tracks: Data Science and Data Engineering.
Pedagogy: The curriculum centers on real-world Big Data applications, utilizing relevant software tools to guide students through core concepts and methodologies.
Data Engineering Focus: Addressing the 3Vs of Big Data (Volume, Variety, and Velocity), we prioritize the development of data analysis systems and computing environments.
Collaboration: We work closely with the National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to cultivate talent specializing in the systems software aspects of data science and engineering.
Research development focuses on two primary directions:
Core Technology Development: Collaborating with top global research institutions to develop advanced core technologies in data science and engineering, focusing on high-performance, high-accuracy, real-time big data analysis, predictive modeling, and visualization.
Innovative Applications: Partnering with government agencies and leading industries to develop innovative Big Data applications, including interdisciplinary projects in Smart Commerce, Smart Transportation, Smart Logistics, Mobile Sensing, Smart Healthcare, Smart Manufacturing, and Fintech.
