Abstract:
How did Pixar make their animations? Why did Cyberpunk 2077 look the way it did? In this talk, I will introduce the physics, algorithms, and math behind modern computer animation and video games that simulate how light interact with matters. I will talk about classical rendering algorithms, and our research efforts to make them lightning fast. I will then talk about our research on using this technology in computer vision to understand the geometry and materials from images. Finally, I will briefly talk about our recent work on using an algorithm, inspired by advanced rendering techniques, to understand how humans interpret the behaviors of other people!
