Education
By combining rich and excellent teaching, human resources and talents and constructing a “One College, One Department, Multiple Programs” organizational structure through course integration and diversified design to cohere the research energy, NCTU’s Department of Computer Science has established 19 key research fields, and encourages the integration of similar research fields to create a quality education research and learning environment.
To comply with the demands of the domestic IT industry and enhance innovative integration and diverse abilities, the Department has planned several specialty courses that are much needed by industry, such as “Operation System Design and Practices” and “Web Systems and Application”; programs such as “Cloud Systems” and “Internet of Things” are also available for students to attend. Based on the computer science-related core abilities that each and every graduate of the Department should be equipped with, as well as the professional core abilities of their field of interest, a series of key programming practicum for freshman and sophomore years will also be planned, along with the key practicum for the individual program, such as the specialty course “Introduction and Practices of Hardware and Software Co-design” of the CS+EE Program; the “Introduction to Compiler Design” of the Computer Science and Engineering Program, where the emphasis is placed on program design and experiments; and the “Introduction to Network Programming” and “Introduction to Computer Graphics” of the Network and Multimedia Engineering Program; and also the planning of supporting measures, in order to better enhance the hands-on programming ability of students in a more systematic and well-planned manner.
The Department is well reputed for its excellent teaching quality, which is constantly aiming at improving students’ learning. In the future, the focus will be extended to enhance students’ virtues in other areas, such as: basic competencies (reading, writing, oral reports, etc.), interdisciplinary diverse learning, creativity cultivation and even entrepreneurship.
There are also spaces, equipment and resources offered to encourage students to establish student book clubs. Extracurricular assistance from teachers is also introduced to encourage students to participate in various creative competitions, and to establish a healthy learning environment. The Department has implemented the education effectiveness audit and formulated an examining mechanism for the development of computer science core competence, such as requiring students to pass the online programming ability test and the English education effectiveness test prior to their graduation.
The Department of Computer Science jointly established the “International Development Office” with the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering to actively seek and expand international cooperation and exchange, diligently promote exchange programs and expand recruitment of international students to study at the University. For example, the Department offers Joint MA and PhD degrees with École Supérieure d'Électricité (SUPELEC) and Telecom & Management SudParis (TSP) in France. The Department encourages students to participate in exchange student programs with international schools to broaden their horizons. Exchange universities include: University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (USA), Technische Universität München (Germany), École Supérieure d'Électricité (France) and KOC UNIV (Turkey).
In addition, we also jointly established the “Electrical Engineering and Computer International Degree Program” with the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering to integrate the teaching and research resources in the electrical engineering and computer science fields. The lectures are held in English; the teaching materials, assignments and exam questions are all predominately in English, so as to enhance the international ability of the students.
